Worcester County Court House Renovation, Snow Hill, MD
The Courthouse Renovation project consisted of the renovation of 30,500 SF of a 200+ year old courthouse. The courthouse was erected in the mid 1700's and is a two-story structure with a basement serving a minor portion of the County's Sheriff's Department. The goal of the project was to convert the original building serving the County Administration and Circuit Court Judicial System to strictly providing Judicial Servic. Many features were incorporated to convert the structure with three items that provied paramount to the conversion process. They are the Circuit Courthouse III, the Orphan's Courtroom, and the secure prisoner transport system to convey prisoners without exposure to the general public. The renovation was performed as the premises remained occupied, requiring temporary spaces for the department occupants to enable the phasing. Work sequencing and coordination of efforts were orchestrated through meetings with department heads, including temporary arrangements for voice and data connections. Specialty systems consisted of security, metal detection at entry doors, prisoner transport, elevator, courtroom sound systems, computer server workroom upgraded voice and data cabling, and fire service recall in elevators. As a result of the project being significantly ahead of schedule with a remaining budget contingency, County officials elected to upgrade many flooring and wall finishes in the final phases without delaying the completion date.
